Shotesham Together

Support for Ukraine 🇺🇦 – Most villagers will be aware that, following on from a point raised at the SVA AGM, a group of Shotesham residents got together to discuss what we, as a village community, could do to support Ukrainian people who are having to flee their home country, and sadly by the looks of things this need isn’t going away very soon. The good news is that a couple of our local IT experts have brought together a website where we can all share, and hopefully bring together the needs of potential refugees with the help that we as individuals and as a community can provide.

The website is aimed both at refugees (hence all the information about Shotesham and Norwich, with a heavy emphasis on how close Norwich is, because that seems very important to the Ukrainians) and also Shotesham residents, whether they are able to help by offering to host or in some other way.  Whilst a number of people have already expressed a desire to help, we would ask that anyone who is interested in either hosting or in offering other kinds of help, even if you’ve been in touch previously, can you please start again by using the form on the Contact page of the website to get in touch. This will help gather all the requisite information in the same place and can assist in the process of matching people with their various needs, please be aware however that, as stated clearly on the website, it is not a matching service as such. Please see the Legal Page on the website for an explanation.

Once you have recorded your interest, you’ll receive a short questionnaire to be completed online and this information will be stored on our database. As you will know from the news, the need for this support remains acute and urgent, so please respond as soon as you can and we can start putting people in touch. We already have expressions of interest from several Ukrainians, though we’re finding that expressions of interest don’t always transfer into a decision to travel here!

Please visit Shoteshamtogether at  www.shoteshamtogether.org,  Shotesham looks forward to trying to help Ukraine in anyway we can, please help by expressing your support. Many thanks to those who have worked to bring this to life so quickly.

However, clearly there are individuals who aren’t quite as supportive, as exposed by the vandalism in Shotesham and other local villages, where some, presumably mindless, idiots have painted swastikas on Ukrainian flags aswell as someone’s property! I say ‘mindless, but if the responsible persons are offended they are perfectly entitled to contact with their own viewpoint should they wish to. No desire to put photos of swastikas on this site, but an article on the issue is available on the EDP website. Shotesham’s response to this incident is to acquire and fly more Ukraine flags across the village in solidarity
