…I think I’m right in saying that both males and females hold loose territories in the winter and both sing a special slightly watery winter song. By January things start to change and the males start to belt out a strong and enthusiastic melody!
The other early year singer is the Mistle Thrush. It’s larger and greyer than the Song Thrush and tends to sing from the top of a tall tree. Have a listen as you go around the village and let them cheer up a grey day! Finally if you are quietly working in your garden you might hear a Blackbird crooning gently to itself in the hedge – one of my favourite bird sounds. FM
