Heritage 27 Walnut Cottage

No 27                         Walnut Cottage

It is thought that there must have been a dwelling on this site since the 13th century, before the creation of ‘New Manors and their copyholds”were forbidden in 1290.

Some villagers knew the property as “Sam Whitings Garden’as he ran a market garden from this site and it is said that he grew the first early potatoes to be bought on Norwich Market.

In 1929 the premises passed to a Mr and Mrs Buck.  Mr Buck ran a bus service between Foulgers Yard in Shotesham and the Boars Head in Norwich.  His wife used ‘The Walnuts’  as the property was then named , as a small private school.  She died in 1957 and since that time the cottage has been residential.

Throughout the 19th century, the value of the cottage, land and buildings appear to remain unchanged at £200
